This is the very first topic that we have covered in our syllabus and it is also a very basic topic which consist of 1 experiment and 5 subtopics:Introduction to Science, the Scientific Method,Variables, Safety in the Lab and the Bunsen Burner.
In the first few Science lessons, we were introduced to the subject of Science in general. This subtopic stimulates our interest in Science and it also tells us the importance and use of Science in our daily lives. We were also told of how science was used in the way that people worked such as how a Nurse or a Journalist uses science. At the end of this subtopic, we were given an assignment to do some research on a Scientist of our choice and do a interview on him. I feel that this assignment was fun and interesting as we got to know many facts about the scientist we did on.
In the next subtopic, we learnt useful skills which were very important. This helps us to carry out our investigation on different questions. Through this subtopic, I have learnt the Scientific Method which is used to analyse and help us to understand different results which we get from our experiments. I feel that this is a very important skill as with this skill we can look at our results in the way that we should as young scientist.
This subtopic is a continuation of the Scientific Method and it helps us to identify the different variables in an Experiment. There are 3 different types of variables which are the Independent, Dependent and Constant variable. The Independent variable is the variable that a Scientist chooses to experiment on and it is the most important variable as it determines the results of the entire experiment. The dependent variable is the result of the experiment and it is determined by the Independent variable. The constant variable is a variable which is used to test the Independent variable and produces the Dependent variable, it is a variable which the Scientist tries to keep constant as its names suggest.
Safety in the Lab is basically the rules and regulations of the Lab. It prepares us for our future expermiments in the Lab. Although it may seem unimportant, it is the very topic that may prevent any disasters or injuries in the Lab. The topic also gives us a better understanding of the Lab and highlight both its dangers and usefulness.
The Bunsen Burner, a commonalty used tool in the Science lab, is our very first experiment as well as our last subtopic in the topic of Science as a Inquiry. We were given a detailed understanding of The Bunsen Burner so as to ensure that we can safely use it in the Lab. After we were given a thorough introduction to it, we were given our first experiment which may seem easy at first but it yet may be challenging if not prepared. We were instructed to light up our Bunsen Burner. With this experiment, the topic was then concluded.
Reflections:This topic serves as a tutorial for the other topics for me. We learnt many useful skills which were the building blocks of our foundation in Science. Through this topic, we were prepared for future experiments in the Lab by knowing how to conduct and analyse an experiment. I feel that this topic was a very fun and yet useful topic for us and it is definitely an essential topic which will always be used when doing the other topics.
